Learner Requirements

In July 2007, VicRoads introduced the Graduated Licensing System (GLS). Under this scheme, there are many rules and regulations. Listed below are many of the requirements.

P1 License - Under 21 Years of Age:

 

◦ Must complete a minimum 120 hours of driving including 10 hours at night time. All driving must be recorded in the official Vic Roads Log Book before obtaining a P1 license.

 

◦ Must hold a learner permit for a minimum of 12 months before obtaining probationary license.

 

◦ No mobile phone use, including hands free.

 

◦ No towing allowed unless for work purposes or under instruction.

 

◦ Not permitted to drive a high-powered vehicle which has an 8 or more cylinder engine, no turbo charged vehicles or super charged vehicles (except diesel), none of the nominated 6 cylinder vehicles or vehicles that have been modified to increase performance.

 

◦ Must fit an alcohol ignition interlock for a minimum of 6 months when relicensed after a drink driving offense.

 

◦ Will have the P1 period extended for 6 months, plus the period of suspension for any license suspension or drink driving offense.

 

◦ Only allowed to carry 1 passenger between the ages of 16-21.

P2 License - Aged 21-24:

 

◦ Must hold a learner permit for a minimum of 6 months before obtaining a probationary license, then obtains the 3 year P2 license.

 

◦ Not permitted to drive a high-powered vehicle which has an 8 or more cylinder engine, no turbo charged vehicles or super charged vehicles (except diesel), none of the nominated 6 cylinder vehicles or vehicles that have been modified to increase performance.

 

◦ Must fit an alcohol ignition interlock for a minimum of 6 months when relicensed after a drink driving offense.

 

◦ Will have the P2 period extended for 6 months, plus the period of suspension for any license suspension or drink driving offense.

Aged 25 years and over:

 

◦ Must hold a learner permit for a minimum of 3 months before obtaining a probationary license, then obtains the 3 year P2 license.

Existing P Provisions:

 

◦ Zero Blood Alcohol limit.

 

◦ Must display P plates at all times.

 

◦ Must always carry probationary license

 

◦ Only permitted to drive an automatic vehicle in tested in an automatic vehicle.

 

◦ License suspension after loss of 5 or more demerit points in any 12 month period.

 

◦ Only able to carry 1 passenger for 12 months if license is suspended or when it is reissued after is has been canceled.

 

◦ Not permitted to drive a high-powered vehicle which has an 8 or more cylinder engine, no turbo charged vehicles or super charged vehicles (except diesel), none of the nominated 6 cylinder vehicles or vehicles that have been modified to increase performance.
